Married Martha Elizabeth (Betty) Burrus (Bland). He and wife are buried at Rockford Cemetery, Surry County, NC. They lived in Cleveland County for a while, and also lived in Asheville for a while. Then they moved to Rockford and lived at what is now called the York Tavern, owned by the Rockford Preservation Society. He was a master musician and added a great legacy to the people of Rockford and the surrounding area by his music and teaching music to others. He ran a music school and the ladies of the school boarded in the community and took music at the school. He also sold pianos, organs, taught music, held "singings", directed choirs, and was an inspiration to several musicians. Children: Cora Elizabeth Bland, Lala Bland (m. E. Sec. Reece), Dalla Bland, Alma Bland Rhoades, Robert Richard Bland, J. Frank Bland, Jr.(m. Mozelle Dugan).
